Hedge laying in Hazelwell Park
Thursday 28/02/2013 by Mick Jones
An NVQ with GAP
(Green Academies Project) funded by the National Trust was being run in Hazelwell Park Today, by Jan Tomlinson from Kings Heath Rangers and Jo Bevan from the National Trust
Both forms of hedglaying were being carried out, Hedge laying, Dead Hedging and Scrub Clearance
Dead Hedging involves using cut branches, unwanted scrub and any other bushy material to create a 'dead' barrier.
Sometimes you have to reinforce the live material with dead wood to improve stockproofness.
A hedgerow may consist of a single species or several, typically mixed at random.
Hedgelaying is the art of making a living fence out of a row of shrubs by bending them over after cutting through them.

The partial severing of the trunk (called a pleacher) leaves sufficient of the bark and cambium layers to transport nutrients to the top of the plant – so it does not die off but continues to grow and form a barrier.
Dead hedging along the side of the path, with the live hedgelaying behind.
