RESIDENTS in Selly Oak will be officially thanked today for their patience during the construction
of a new bridge.
A plaque on the new Dogpool Lane bridge will be officially unveiled by 100-year-old local resident
Daisy Glenn at 6pm.
The new bridge over the River Rea. replaces the previous structure built in 1907, was constructed
by Amey, the city council's roads contractor.
The new bridge, which reopened to traffic in May, was designed to better deal with increasing
traffic on Dogpool Lane and reduce the risk of flooding.
Coun Tahir Ali, cabinet member in charge of transport, said: "It is great to have a new bridge that
meets the demands of modern traffic levels and will be a benefit to the area for years to come.
"The new bridge reduces the flood risk in Selly Park and has already been tested against the
elements with storms earlier in the summer, performing much better than the previous structure." |
