We don’t want boozy riots here!

By Paul Bradley
CAMPAIGNERS today vowed to keep Bournville alcohol- free amid claims a nearby pub was ‘out of control’.
A riot outside the Three Horse Shoes pub, in neighbouring Stirchley, was narrowly averted when nearly 60 police officers and a helicopter were needed to break up fighting last month, protesters claim.

Today, councillors from the Bournville committee demanded a review of the pub’s alcohol licence in a move never seen before in the city.
Bournville councillor, Nigel Dawkins, said: “Normally areview of a pub’s licence is only called for by the police or licensing authority but there have been so many complaints about the pub we have
decided to call for it ourselves. This will automatically trigger the council to look at the Three Horse Shoes again.
“I have had numerous letters from people living close to the pub with many complaining about assaults, noise and intimidating behaviour
in the early hours at weekends. We have also heard of fights breaking out as people try and get taxis home.
“The pub has obviously lost control and we want to bring them back into line.”
The move comes just six months
after campaigners from the 100- year-old village stopped Tesco selling alcohol from its new Linden Road store.
If bosses at the Birmingham licensing authority see fit, they could revoke the Three Horse shoes alcohol licence and shut the pub down.
A spokesman for TCG pubs, who own the Three Horse Shoes, said:
“We know nothing about the riot incident but appreciate there have been some ongoing issues in the area.
‘‘We have already met with police to work out ways to prevent these problems and since we voluntarily reduced our opening hours by one hour there have been no problems.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and are confident we will retain our licence when it comes under review.”
