27 Bus to stay on Bournville Lane
23 Oct 2008

Latest update from Councillor Timothy Huxtable

"I am pleased to tell residents that in our meeting with West Midlands
Travel yesterday (Tuesday 22nd October) we believe we reached a compromise.
They agreed to remove from the table a route change or an intention to put
on new larger buses and in return we promised to make changes to the road
layout (parking bays and other obstructions) in the Bournville Lane area
which will allow them to run a more efficient service.

There is much more discussion to take place but Cllr Dawkins, Evans and I
are confident that the end result will be that the No. 27 route will be
preserved as it is. Compromise and partnership have saved the day once we
were able to demonstrate the strength of feeling by Bournville Ward
Councillors and Stirchley and Bournville residents against such a change to
the No.27 route.

The views of local residents helped us to convince them that a compromise
was best all round.

Kind Regards

Timothy Huxtable

Stirchley Baths Open day.
by Peter Walker chairman Stirchley Neighbourhood Forum
Stirchley neighbourhood forum arranged a visit to Stirchley baths today Tuesday 12th August, after a slow start we were amazed to see the queue get larger and larger, two hours stretched to three hours and before you knew it we were having to turn people away.
In the end a total of 286, including residents of Stirchley, past and present came to look at the baths for a large variety of reasons.  So many in fact that another opportunity has been created for it to open again on Friday 12th September (time to be confirmed) there were a lot of people who were sad to see the decay of the building, which has been left empty for 20 years.
Although most seem happy that it could be reused as a community centre, the response was city wide with one couple coming all the way from Wolverhampton to take a look inside.
The Birmingham mail were there interviewing folk in the queue and taking photographs.

Opening for a say on future
By Catherine Lillington Birmingham Mail August 7th 2008
A BIRMINGHAM landmark which was nearly bulldozed is opening its doors next week so locals have a say in its future.
Stirchley swimming baths, in Pershore Road, have been derelict since closing more than 20 years ago.
But next Tuesday the baths will be open for an hour between 11am and noon, to let people inside for their first glimpse of the baths since they were mothballed.
Campaigners long ago gave up hope of reopening the 1911 Grade II listed building as a swimming pool.
Instead they are pinning their hopes on plans to turn it into a community centre.
Since the pool's closure in 1987, arsonists have left the wooden reception.
blackened and buddleia is now growing out of the walls.
Next Tuesday's visit has been organised by the Stirchley Neighbourhood Forum and is a follow-up to a trip made to the former Nechells Baths, which reopened as a community centre in 2005.
Brenda Thomas, vice-chairwoman of the forum said: "It was a crying shame when it was shut with no notice at all.
"Stirchley deteriorated immediately after the baths closed, particularly Bournville Lane.
-All the little shops gradually closed down because there was no need for them.
"People have said they would love to see what it  looks like inside now. Most people haven't seen it since it was closed and so have no idea what it's like.
"It probably looks worse than it is."
Coun Nigel Dawkins, who met his wife Donna at the pool, said the transformation would be paid for by either Tesco or Co-op, who have rival bids for the area.

POLICE have launched a campaign to "screw" down crime following a spate of number plate thefts.
Officers from Kings Heath police have joined forces with Halfords to fit free anti-theft registration plate screws into cars, in a bid to prevent number plates from being stolen.

Vehicle owners are urged to bring their cars, between 10am and 2pm, to Stirchley Co-op on Thursday, August 7.

New life for Brum disused alehouse

A BIRMINGHAM couple have set themselves a fresh challenge - to turn round the fortunes of a landmark pub.
Tony and Janet Lakin, who have a record of transforming struggling businesses, start a ten-year lease at The Hibernian, in Pershore Road, Stirchley, in September.
The Lakins, of Pineapple Road, have run restaurants, care homes, sandwich bars and hair salons nationwide and now plan to enter a new industry by converting the disused pub into a hotel.
They will rename it The New Dogpool Hotel in reference to an hotel which used to stand on the opposite side of Pershore Road.
The couple also want to open up the building for use by the community.
A launch party is being held on Friday, September 5.

Car park birth is just the ticket!
Byline: By Paul Suart COPYRIGHT 2008 Birmingham Post & Mail Ltd
BEAMING dad Michael Pash told today of his joy and relief after his son made it safely into the world - in a car park.
Michael had just parked in an Edgbaston multi-storey, ready to walk the short distance with partner Donna Shirley to Birmingham Women's Hospital, when she started having contractions.
As 26-year-old Donna, from Elm Tree Road, Stirchley, got out of the car she dropped to the floor in agony as baby son Conner decided he'd had enough of waiting.
Two women walking past - one an intensive care nurse - stopped to offer their coats as blankets while Michael dashed into the hospital for assistance.
But in the three minutes it took Michael to get back, Conner Miles Pash had already made his entrance at 9.10am on Wednesday, July 23, weighing in at a healthy 6lb 5oz.
Donna and Michael, who already have a little girl 18-month-old Millie Louise, had set off for hospital on the advice of nurses at the delivery suite after Donna went into early labour.
While her contractions became stronger and more frequent they were no different to those Donna endured when she had an 11-hour labour with daughter Millie Louise.
With nothing to suggest urgent attention would be required, the couple parked their car in a multi-storey at the far end of the hospital site for Donna to get some fresh air.
But then the drama unfolded - and Michael missed the magical moment.
"Donna's first words were 'sorry, but you've missed it'," 23-year-old Michael said.
...."I wasn't worried about that - I just wanted them both to be healthy and OK."
With mother and baby still requiring urgent medical care in stepped another hero, 40-year-old builder Kevin Jennings, who spotted the commotion from a building site across the road.
The father of three from Leominster, Herefordshire, whisked the trio into his van and drove them to the main entrance so Conner could be transferred to an incubator while the couple waited for a wheelchair for Donna.
Kevin said: "I would do that for anyone. I could only see the back of Donna, but could tell something serious was happening."
Conner was today doing well and his proud parents were back home by 6pm, but not before the trio of good samaritans had left flowers at Donna's bedside.

Michael added: "They were lifesavers, honestly. Without them I would not like to think what would have happened.
"Someone was looking over us in some way."

Birmingham Mail July11 2008
Family of six flees as blaze hits house.

A FAMILY of six were evacuated after fire swept through their Birmingham home.

The occupants were alerted to the inferno at the twostorey mid-terraced home in Beilby Road, Stirchley, by a downstairs smoke alarm and immediately fled the building.

Fire crews from Bournbrook and Billesley attended shortly after 12.40pm yesterday and despite controlling the fire within minutes were detained for most of the afternoon to help police with their inquiries. No one was hurt in the blaze, which started in a first floor bedroom where a bed caught fire. The fire is being treated as suspicious.

Co-op: kept in dark about any developments.
by Cyrrhian MacraeCo-op

‘We can confirm that as of 22 January, approximately three months after the City Council announced that it was minded to select Tesco as its preferred supplier for the Pershore Road/Hunts Road development, Midlands Co-op has not received any feedback to explain why its bid was unsuccessful.   We understand that the decision has yet to be fully ratified, and we have not received any notification as to a likely timescale.  In the meantime, rumours are abounding that our Superstore is under imminent threat of closure, which is damaging to both our staff and our customers alike.   We can state categorically that this is not the case.   We have traded in Stirchley for over 100 years – we will not be driven out without a fight.  Unfortunately, until we receive formal notification from the City Council, it is impossible to take any further steps.  We are appreciative of all the support we are receiving from our loyal customers and members.’

Tesco Wins; Now the tough talking begins
by the Conservative party

Tesco seems to have won the long drawn out battle to develop a Supermarket in Stirchley against the CO-OP's plans to develop a Retail Park. Councillor Nigel Dawkins said, 'Despite TESCO winning the bid process, there is still much hard negotiating to take place. As local Councillors, we have made it a priority condition that whoever wins  the battle must help us to develop the Baths site into a community Centre and Civic Quarter for the people of Stirchley. Tory Tesco Trechery?
by the Green party

Local voice ignored Back in August, the Green Party collected 65 letters of opposition to Tesco's bid in just two hours — discovering in the process that many Cotteridge shopkeepers were unaware of the situation. In our recent survey, over 70% of Bournville Ward residents
who responded were against Tesco's application to develop a food retail site in Stirchley. If local opposition to Tesco's bid is so clear, why did the Council approve it?
